Our recommendations on what to see and do in Auckland

When it comes to attractions and activities in Auckland, the team at NZ Hotel Deals have done it all. Some of us are thrill seekers, while others prefer more subdued recreational activities, so we really do have a good sense of the top things to do around the city of sails.

Check out our list of top attractions in Auckland below:

Sporting Events at Mount Smart Stadium and Eden Park

Experience the thrilling atmosphere of a rugby game at one of the two Auckland sporting arenas – Eden Park and Mt Smart Stadium (formerly Ericsson Stadium). Kiwis and tourists alike get right into the rugby scene and generally support either the All Blacks, the New Zealand Warriors or one of their favorite international rugby teams.

Mt Smart Stadium is the home of the infamous New Zealand Warriors rugby league team, has housed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1990 Commonwealth Games as well as a plethora of other sporting events. It is built in the quarried remnants of the Mount Smart volcanic cone and with it’s close proximity to the city centre (a mere 10 kilometers), attending a sporting event at Mount Smart is considered a must do when visiting Auckland.

Same goes with Eden Park – New Zealand’s largest stadium. It has a rich sporting and social history and is known for housing generally Rugby Union games in the winter months, and Cricket events in the summer months. However, in recent times Eden Park has also accommodated Rugby League, NRL, and A-League Soccer (football) events. The stadium has been selected as the venue for the 2015 Cricket World Cup between Australia and New Zealand, so get amongst it and book some tickets in advance, before the seats sell out!

The Sky Tower – Auckland’s Skyline Feature Landmark

Visiting the iconic Auckland Sky Tower is a must for all tourists visiting Auckland. The whopping 1,076 ft high tower is the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. The Sky Tower is part of the SKYCITY casino which attracts over half a million people per year and also houses two restaurants and a cafe. One of the restaurants has the renowned title of being New Zealand’s only revolving restaurant, which rotates 360 degrees every hour, perfect for experiencing city views while enjoying a meal and a glass of wine or two.

The Sky Tower also features the ‘SkyJump’ – a 630 ft (192 metres) high bungy jumping experience not for the faint hearted. Jumpers can reach speeds of up to 85 km/h, so if getting the adrenaline pumping through your veins is high on your list of things to do, get over to the SkyJump and book yourself in.

Vector Arena the Entertainment Centre

Hosting big name international acts such as Pink, Lady Gaga, The Foo Fighters, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Eyed Peas and Queens of the Stone Age (as well as many, many more), Vector Arena is the go to venue for large concerts and events. The arena can seat 12000 people as well as an area for mosh pits that New Zealander’s are known for creating.

Vector Arena also hosts a range of other performances, ranging from comedians to sporting events such as Basketball, Netball, Professional Wrestling and Ice Hockey.

If you haven’t had the chance to get down at the Vector Arena before, there is still plenty of opportunity to do so with many more international acts announced for 2013 / 2014 including Bruno Mars and Beyoncé. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as larger acts generally sell out – meaning door sales are not possible.

Enjoy a wine and a meal at one of Auckland’s Wineries

For those of you who want to whet your palate, we recommend the Villa Maria Estate. Located in Mangere, a short drive from the Auckland International Airport, Villa Maria is set on beautiful grounds and is the ideal place for a relaxed lunch, private function, or an afternoon of wine tasting.

During the summer months Villa Maria Estate is host to the Classic Hits Winery tour. This is a great day out with family and friends, where you can enjoy the best of what New Zealand summer has to offer.

So if you are a wine lover, Villa Maria Estate is the perfect place in Auckland to go and try some of the country’s best wine.

Harbour Cruise to Waiheke Island

Also known for its abundant wineries, vineyards, and olive groves, Waiheke Island is a popular place for many visitors and Auckland locals alike. If your time is precious, a day trip to Waiheke and around the Auckland Harbor is a fantastic way to kill some time and relax with amazing coastal views.

However, if you have some time on your hands, we recommend staying a night or two on Waiheke Island or one of its neighbouring islands as the serenity, tranquillity and picturesque coastal views will do wonders for your mental wellbeing.

There is an abundance of activities to experience on Waiheke Island, including anything from visiting an Alpaca farm to diving in New Zealand’s crystal clear waters, sailing, island tours and winery tours or just relaxing on a secluded beach. Nature is a big part of Waiheke, with many historic sites, wildlife and diverse habitats and national reserves, so if you need to get out of the city and find your roots, Waiheke may be exactly what you need.
